Medicare & fees

Medicare rebates for telehealth psychology

Telehealth sessions attract the same Medicare rebate as face-to-face sessions. If you’re eligible, you can see a psychologist by video or phone from anywhere in Australia and claim part of the fee back.

How it works

1

See your GP

Ask for a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and a referral to a psychologist.

2

Book online

Choose a time in our booking portal. Your intake and consent form arrives by SMS and email.

3

Attend your session

By secure Healthdirect video call or phone, wherever you are in Australia.

4

We lodge your claim

Once payment is received, we process the Medicare claim. Your rebate is paid to your nominated bank account.

Which GP? Since 1 November 2025, the MHTP referral needs to come from your usual GP, or a GP at the practice you’re registered with through MyMedicare. A referral from a one-off or walk-in GP may not qualify for a rebate.

Sessions and reviews

Under Medicare’s Better Access program you can claim up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. Referrals are issued in courses of up to six sessions, and your GP reviews your progress before referring you for the remaining sessions. We send your GP a brief progress report to support that review.

Fees

Standard consultation (50 minutes)$240
Medicare rebate (with valid referral and MHTP)approx. $101.55
Estimated out-of-pocket gap$138.45

Our fee is below the APS Schedule of Fees 2026/27 suggested fee of $330. Payment details are confirmed securely in your intake form; nothing is charged until after your session.

Private health insurance

Many extras policies include psychology. Check with your fund. You can claim either Medicare or private health for a session, not both.

No referral? No problem

You don’t need a GP referral to book. Without an MHTP, sessions are private-fee ($240) with no Medicare rebate.

Not eligible for Medicare?

Telehealth suits most adults who are medically and psychiatrically stable. Some presentations need more intensive or in-person care. See conditions we don’t support. If you need urgent help, visit our crisis and emergency support page.
